Since we are all spending a little more time at home these days, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to share my pregnancy safe morning skincare routine. When I found out I was pregnant, I really became more conscious of the products I was using on my body including skincare.  It was really important to me to start incorporating more clean/pregnancy safe products into my everyday routine so I basically did a complete overhaul of what I was using.  Now I’m not saying this is a “must” for moms-to-be, because trust me, I know how expensive skincare can be. Educating myself on the chemicals/ingredients to avoid while pregnant was something that was important to me and many of these products I have fell in love with and will continue to use even after my pregnancy.  I did quite a bit of research on these skincare products, and have found a couple great resources I’ll be sharing today if you’re interested in doing your own research as well.  Please note: I am not a skincare expert by any means and you should consult your own physician about products you are using.  I’m just your average girl that cares about what goes in and on my body.  These are my recommendations after doing research, and personally using these products for the last 3-4 months.  I will also be sharing my nighttime routine in the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned!

RESOURCES

15 Minute Beauty – this is an awesome blog started by a doctor, mom and beauty addict. She reviews numerous brands, and basically has a list of which of the brands products are pregnancy safe and which are not. I found it extremely informative and a great starting point before trying many products.

Byrdie.com – written by a dermatologist, this is a very straight forward article about 14 ingredients to avoid during pregnancy and why.  I found this very easy to understand and appreciated that it was straight to the point.

INGREDIENTS TO AVOID

Here is a quick rundown of the 14 ingredients to avoid while pregnant, according to the above mentioned resource and many others. Again, I’m not a doctor, but these are the ingredients I personally tried to steer clear of…

Benzoyl Peroxide, Fragrance, BPA, Hydroquinone, Formaldehyde, Parabens, Phthalates, Retinoids, Salicylic Acid, Thioglycolic Acid, Chemical Sunscreens, Botulinum Toxin, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Diazolidinyl Urea.

PREGNANCY SAFE SKINCARE ROUTINE

[1] Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel-  I use this cleanser each morning. It’s soap free, gets nice and foamy and doesn’t dry out your skin.  Plus the lavender extract used in the formula helps to reduce acne which I had major issues with the first couple months of my pregnancy.

[2] The Ordinary's Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%- as I mentioned above, I struggled with acne the first 2-3 months of my pregnancy.  I wanted to find something to help reduce the breakouts, but most acne products contain Salicylic Acid which is a pregnancy no-no.  Enter this amazing product.  Its a high-strength vitamin and mineral blemish formula that reduces the appearance of skin blemishes and balances the overproduction of oil which is the root cause of clogged pores.  I used this every morning the first few months on problem areas, and now use only when I feel like pesky breakouts are trying to make an appearance.

[3] Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel-  if you’re using the acne product above, your skin is definitely going to need some extra hydration.  The gel formula absorbs quickly, and hyaluronic acid is one of the few acids you can actually safely use while pregnant.  This product is at a great price point for the quality in my opinion. Another affordable option that I also used and really like is THIS

[4] Kate Sommerville Goat Milk Moisturizing Cream- after applying my serum and gel, I use this super gentle moisturizer.  It leaves my skin feeling soft and smooth, and even though it’s called a “cream” I find this formula light enough for daily use.

[5] Murad Renewing Eye Cream- I’ll admit, I’m guilty of forgetting about my under eye area…but it needs moisturized too!  I figured since I was revamping my skincare routine, now would be a great time to start getting into the habit of showing this sensitive area a little extra love.  This formula brightens, hydrates and also helps with fine lines and crows feet.

[6]  Bareminerals Complexion Rescue- In an attempt to find a replacement for my beloved It Cosmetics CC Cream (the Retinoid and Salicylate contained in the formula is a pregnancy no-go) I stumbled across this option.  I was looking for something lightweight and natural that I could use on “no makeup” days just to give my skin a bit of a boost.  It works really well to even out my skin tone, and I would say it is light-medium coverage with a dewy finish.

[7] Rosebud Perfume Co. Rosebud Salve- I never feel completely “ready” for the day without applying some sort of lip balm and this one has been a favorite of mine for YEARS!  I can’t even count how many of these I have bought over the years.  This super hydrating formula will leave your lips feeling SO hydrated, plus it’s a multi-functional product that can also be used on minor cuts/scrapes and other chapped areas such as elbows/knees to relieve dryness.
